A 54-year-old man has been
apprehended following a gruesome double murder in the Dwengu area of
Mid-Illovo, located south of Durban. The victims, an 83-year-old woman and her
39-year-old daughter, were tragically shot, decapitated, and disposed of in a pit
latrine on Wednesday.
Shaheen Suleiman, the head of
Magma investigations and security, reported that the police promptly responded
to the scene upon receiving the distress call. As they approached the suspect,
he allegedly opened fire and evaded capture by fleeing into the nearby bush.
Despite extensive efforts by law enforcement and security personnel, the
suspect remained elusive.
Subsequently, information
regarding the suspect's location emerged, leading to the formation of an
operational team comprising Magma security and Mid-Illovo police members. Upon
reaching the suspect's homestead, they successfully arrested him and confiscated
an unlicensed 9mm pistol.
Suleiman confirmed the
devastating revelation that the victims were, in fact, the suspect's mother and
sister. KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo
corroborated the incident's details and disclosed that the man was apprehended
in the Esigodini area.
The motive behind the brutal
killings remains unknown. The suspect is scheduled to appear in the Richmond
magistrate's court on Friday to face the charges stemming from this heinous
crime.
