On Wednesday, authorities in the Free State were left astonished when human remains were uncovered in the backyard of a residence. The remains, wrapped in a carpet, were discovered in a sunken grave, leaving the local police bewildered.

According to Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring, the provincial police spokesperson, the family members residing at the home alerted the police station about the suspicious grave. "On December 27, 2023, around 8 am, two men visited the Makwane police station and reported their suspicion of something buried in their backyard. They claimed to have observed what appeared to be a sinking grave," explained Mophiring.

Upon reaching the location, the police found that the grave had already been excavated with a spade, revealing a soiled carpet. Inside, a human skull, a pair of jeans, and a soccer t-shirt were discovered. A family member recognized the clothing as similar to that of his younger brother, who hailed from the neighboring country of Lesotho and had last been seen in October 2021.

The family revealed that they had not reported the brother missing previously, as he had a history of disappearing for extended periods before returning. Mophiring stated, "An inquest has been initiated to ascertain the cause of death and to identify the individual to whom the remains belong." The investigation aims to shed light on the circumstances surrounding this disturbing discovery.
