During the festive season in
Gauteng, a total of 242 individuals have lost their lives in road accidents,
marking an increase compared to previous years, according to the provincial
traffic police. Sello Maremane, the spokesperson for Gauteng traffic police
(GTP), disclosed that 123 of the casualties were pedestrians. The primary
factors contributing to the surge in road fatalities include pedestrian
jaywalking, speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, and reckless
driving, exacerbated by recent wet weather conditions. As holidaymakers engage
in New Year celebrations at various leisure spots, the GTP emphasized the
importance of caution for road users and anticipated heavy traffic in the
approaching new year.
Maremane stressed the need for responsible behavior, urging motorists to avoid alcohol consumption while on the roads, which includes both jaywalking and drinking and driving. The GTP made it clear that lawlessness would not be tolerated by traffic police. To ensure compliance and curb criminal activities, GTP officers and crime prevention wardens are set to be deployed across Gauteng, reinforcing the importance of adherence to road regulations.
