An advisory has been issued to holidaymakers following a rabies outbreak in coastal regions of KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. The National Department of Agriculture highlights rabies as a zoonotic disease, emphasizing its transmission to humans through contact with infected animals. Reggie Ngcobo, the department's spokesperson, underscores that the virus spreads through the saliva of infected animals, particularly through bites, scratches, or licking.

Rabies affects the brain and is fatal upon the manifestation of clinical signs such as behavioral changes and neurological symptoms. Ngcobo urges caution, especially in high-risk coastal areas, advising against approaching or handling stray dogs and cats. He emphasizes the importance of reporting stray animals to local authorities and seeking immediate medical attention if exposure is suspected. Ngcobo stresses the need for proper vaccination of pets to prevent the spread of rabies and encourages individuals to consult local veterinary services for vaccination access.
