State Challenges Bail for Woman Connected to 'Insurance-Linked Murder'

The Molopo magistrate's court is set to resume proceedings next week as an investigating officer continues testimony in opposition to the bail application of Agnes Setshwantsho, accused of participating in the murder of a relative to gain from an insurance payout.

The case, adjourned until December 13, involves charges of murder, two counts of fraud, and one of defeating the ends of justice against Setshwantsho. During the recent hearing, Setshwantsho's defense attorney presented an affidavit advocating for her release on bail, while Sgt Kheshi Mabunda, the investigating officer, outlined reasons for opposing bail. The National Prosecuting Authority reported that an intelligence operation, in collaboration with an insurance company, led to Setshwantsho's arrest. The investigation, prompted by a tip-off from relatives, connected her to a case where a female relative's mysterious death was initially ruled as natural. It was revealed that Setshwantsho allegedly fraudulently obtained insurance for the deceased before her murder. The ongoing inquiry may result in additional charges against the accused, who will remain in custody until the bail application's outcome.
