Bail Denied for Fort Hare University Murder Suspect Deemed a Threat

The request for bail by one of the ten individuals accused of murders at the University of Fort Hare has been denied by the Dimbaza Magistrate's Court in the Eastern Cape, citing concerns over the individual being considered "dangerous." The accused are facing charges related to the murders of the university's fleet manager, Petrus Roets, and the vice-chancellor's bodyguard, Richard Vesele, along with attempted murders of Vice-Chancellor Professor Sakhele Buhlungu and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Renuka Vithal.

Isaac Plaatjies, the university's director of investigations and vetting, is believed to be the mastermind behind the crimes. Magistrate Zwelethu Ngetu emphasized the potential danger to others if the accused were released, based on evidence indicating a risk to the lives of university officials, investigators, and witnesses. The state, opposing bail, pointed out Plaatjies' close collaboration with the investigating team, making him privy to sensitive case information. The accused face charges ranging from murder and attempted murder to firearms offenses and theft of a motor vehicle. Notably, alleged hitmen organizer Zimele Chiliza and attorney Phelisa Nkonyeni were granted bail, while others had their applications denied. The case revolves around allegations of serious maladministration, fraud, and corruption within the university, leading to death threats against those involved in exposing the wrongdoing.
