In Sabie, Mpumalanga, a suspected robber met his demise in a confrontation with the police following an armed robbery at a local supermarket. Authorities reported that four armed individuals entered the store on Saturday, threatening victims with firearms and making off with an undisclosed sum of money before fleeing on foot.

Upon receiving notification of the incident, the police promptly responded. Observant officers located the fleeing suspects, and a pursuit ensued. The suspects allegedly opened fire on the police, prompting a retaliatory response from law enforcement. During the exchange of gunfire, one suspect sustained injuries, while another was fatally shot, as detailed by police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala.

Upon searching the deceased suspect, authorities discovered a 9mm pistol and 11 rounds of live ammunition in his possession. The remaining two suspects managed to evade arrest and are currently at large. Fortunately, no members of the police were reported injured during the shootout.

The injured suspect was transported to the hospital under police guard for medical treatment. An investigation into charges of business robbery, attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and an inquest is underway. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) will conduct a separate investigation into the shooting incident.
